THE SCHOOL BUS
School buses present some unique challenges to rescuers. This three-hour course will introduce the audience to what they may encounter at a school bus accident. The course is intended to produce an informed responder capable of reading a scene accurately, working effectively to save lives in a unique vehicle type, and understanding the dynamics of an accident involving large numbers of children.

  • Types: familiarize with the four different types and how to read what their special characteristics mean to first-in companies
  • Construction materials, methods, regulations, durability, contrast with other bus and multi-passenger vehicles
  • Key safety features
  • Seatbelt controversies
  • Visible landmarks
  • Special considerations for fuel types, engine placement, rollovers
  • Designed entry points, along with best forcible entry points
  • Patient Extrication tips
  • MCI scene layout considerations
  • Utilization of additional resources such as the driver, law enforcement, coroner
  • Dealing with parents
  • Personal impact on rescuers of this type of call
